What are Lay Servant Ministry Courses?
Who can enroll and where can I take a Lay Servant Ministry Course?
Everyone is welcome to enroll in courses through the Lay Servant Ministries program. To become a certified Lay Servant in the church, it is required that you complete the Basic Lay Servant course offered several times a year throughout the state. However, if you have yet to complete the basic course, you are still welcome to enroll in one of the advanced courses. They are still useful for learning and provide valuable lessons you can take back to your church and community.
Basic and advanced courses are available several times a year at various locations throughout the state. Some advanced courses are also available online for your convenience. Basic & Advanced Lay Servant Classes
Saturday: October 26 & November 9, 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.
Ministry isn’t just a clergy endeavor; all Christians are called to serve. We encourage everyone to come and participate in one of two upcoming Lay Servant classes being held this autumn at the New Hope UMC. On Saturday, October 26th and November 2nd from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Pastor Pam Harkema (Driftless Regional Ministry – Liberty Pole, New Hope, & Retreat UMC) and Pastor Cheryl Weaver (Prairie du Chien & Eastman Salem UMC) will host concurrent classes at the church.
Pastor Pam will be leading the Basic Lay Servant Ministry class which will lay the foundation for all courses available within the scope of lay servant ministries. Come and discover how you are gifted and how God is calling you to use your gifts! Examine the spiritual practices that you are currently developing and learn how to make improvements in your spiritual life!
Pastor Cheryl Weaver will lead the Advanced Lay Servant class on Preaching. This class is designed for those who do not have formal preaching training. When you are called to fill the pulpit, how do you prepare and develop a meaningful message? Come and share your experiences and learn new ideas for preparing to fill the pulpit in the future!
Each class has a required text and students should acquire their own copies in advance of the attending the class. “Lay Servant Ministries” by Sandy Zeigler and Brian Jackson (usually ~ $11.00) is required for the Basic class. “From Pew to Pulpit” by Clifton Guthrie (usually ~ $12.00) is required for the Advanced Preaching class.
If you would like to participate in a class, please register for the class you wish to participate in. The register, please either call Pastor Pam at (608) 648-2528 or e-mail her at email@example.com. There is a registration fee of $15 per class. Please register by Friday, October 11th.
